Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

The two videos that I chose to watch were “The Drawings of Michelangelo”, “Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance”.I chose those two videos because their titles seemed interesting and it made me want to learn more on what they were about.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

When watching “The Drawings of Michelangelo” I felt the main concept of this video was the comparison of the different pieces of work that he created and it as well focuses on the tools, and techniques artist use. In the second video “Leonardo Da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance” the main thing I learned was the life of Leonardo from birth to his death. Lastly, the video I saw was “”The night to Watch” this film basically focuses on the many things that came about during this era.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I feel like in all these videos can relate to the readings from the text in many ways. I felt the most important thing that these videos show is that it goes more in debt  on renaissance art and what the artist has contributed during this time, which is what the text is all about.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

My opinion on the films is that they were much more interesting than last week’s videos. I felt the films I chose to watch were very detailed and informative. Overall the films added more debt to what I was learning about when reading the textbook.

Art Making/Material Exploration: Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

When doing this project it was very different having to use my hand as the subject matter. However, I found this project entertaining because it was easier to look at the all the details since it is my hand.  

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

The media I chose to use for this project was a pencil. I chose to use a pencil because when I made a mistake I was able to erase and start over. Another positive aspect about using this was that a pencil is easier to grasp than charcoal.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

When drawing with my non-dominant hand it was obviously much more difficult for me since I don’t use that hand for writing or drawing purposes. Using this hand, made the process much slower and the drawing of my hand wasn’t as good.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

Based on my final drawings what I had predicted proved to be right. I knew that my left handed picture would most likely come out looking much better than the picture using my non-dominant hand.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

I would not consider using my non dominant hand to create artwork in the future. I feel like this because my hand is very shaky and awkward to draw with. When using my  non dominant hand I am less able to control my movement as I do with my left hand.

Week 8 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above. “Late Gothic Art and Architecture: England” because this era was very interesting and I like how the video showed its transformation through time periods. The second video I chose was “The Birth of the Middle Ages” because I find it interesting that this era became known as the Dark era. Lastly, I chose “Cairo Museum” because I found it interesting how this museum is known for the great pieces of work that are inside and the history behind it.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. One key concept I learned In the “Late Gothic Art and Architecture: England” was drastic art had transitioned into because of this style. In “The Birth of the Middle Ages” one key concept I learned was how Japan also at the time had their own version of the middle ages. The last key concept I learned in “Cairo Museum” was the famous pieces that are in this museum that I had never heard about it was quite interesting.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? I felt the videos had a lot to do with the readings in the textbook like many of the other videos I felt the videos just give a visual description of what was read in the textbook. I felt some of it was repetitive but it was informative at the same time.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I thought that the films were much more boring then the films we have been watching recently, although they do add depth to the textbook. Watching the videos after reading the text give me a diverse set of information and it makes the easier for me to understand the concepts because I can read about them and see them.

Video Review Module 7

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In the “Prairie Style” video I got to learn about Frank Lloyd Right and his style of architecture it explains how his style changed modern architecture and it shows example of architects that got inspired by his work to create something of their own. In the video “Architecture: The Science of Design” I got to learn on how science can relate to architecture. I learned that science is used to figure out ways to project skyscrapers from the environment. The last video “Classical Architecture” focuses mainly on the architecture of the Greek and the Romans. I learned how their architecture had a great influence on the architecture we see today.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I felt like all three videos had a lot of similarities to what I read in the textbook. However, the video that I felt related more to the textbook was in “Classical Architecture” because there was a lot about the archeticutre in Europe which I learned in the book as well.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

I felt that the videos were very informative and I learned a lot from watching it because it gave more indebt information compared to the book I also found it more enjoyable then reading through the textbook.  

4. From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film?

From the group of four videos I chose to watch “Last Call for Planet Earth” Sustainable Development and Architecture I picked this video because it was the most engaging. Overall, I enjoyed the video I got to learn different ways to protect the earth from pollution and other horrible harms to the planet.

Art Making/Material Exploration #3

A. What is an installation art?

Installation art describes an artist of any type that creates works of art the transform the perception of a specific space.

B. What materials are used installation art?

The materials used to create this can be anything. As shown in the video artist pick thier materials depending on what they wanted to portray. For example one artist used pasta for their creation.

C. Why make installation art? 

There is no concrete reason for installation art but some reason can be that the artist wants to make a statement or portray space to others in the way it is perceived to them. Lastly, installation art is created to convey a message to its audience that art can be a range of anything in sight.

D. Which artist/installation did I find most interesting?

One of the most interesting pieces of installation art that I found entertaining while watching the video was when the artist brought in the wheel. I like this because it showed the real meaning of installation, which is anything, that occupies space even a wheel in this case.

A. From the material reviewed, is there an inspiration piece that I feel a connection with?

The sculptures that were painted in purple and pink with polka dot and on the bottom were bits of pasta gave me inspiration. I found that piece most interesting because of the materials used and because of its colors. It reminds me of happy and girly colors which fits my personality and inspired my installation.

B. What theme do I want to explore in my installation? Refer to your textbook if you need to review Themes of Art.

The theme that I am exploring into would probably have to do with environment and media. I want to portray what I see around me on a daily basis and show the things that are in my surroundings that I use everyday.

C. What materials will I use?

The materials that I will be using will consist of pictures from magazines such as celebrities that inspire me with their fashion. I made a box out of the magazines to make a box to hold all of my other magazines.

D. Where will this installation be located and why?

This installation will be in my room because my room is where I spend most of my time reading my magazines. Also, the magazine holder I made fits in with my room’s girly vibe.

4. Describe your installation. Be sure to use the worksheet from Project #3 as your guide.

My installation I made my installation with rolled up magazines to create the space for my other magazines.

This also fit my colorful girl personality.

6. What are your thoughts on the planning and creation of a site specific installation?

 I liked this because I felt free and I created something that I found interesting and something that I could use on the daily basis. I also liked it because I did not feel the need to worry about if I was falling under the installation category.

Blog: Video Review:

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In the first video “Through the Eyes of the Sculptor” I learned the full process that goes into creating a sculpture. I learned that determine the use of a rock by knocking on the stone. The sound indicates whether the stone is solid or has a crack. I also learned that many sculptures take form in marble, clay, and stone.  

In the second video “Glass and Ceramics”, I learned about glass blowing and stained glass windows, which are the two traditional glass-making techniques. I learned that glass is made from sand that is set on fire with other components. The creation of a glass cup itself takes a lot of firing twisting and turning.

In the last video “Installation Art” I got to learn about what defines installation of art, which is anything that takes up space and defines the space. I also learned that its one of the most popular things to do and it all depends on what the artist wants to do.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I felt that the readings from the textbook related to the videos and gave me a brief idea of the topics I would be learning about in the video. Then the video gave more in-depth information of each topic. For example, the text book talked about the different materials used when making a sculpture in the video I got to see those exact materials used however, through the video I got to see what it looks like the title it has during the process of making a piece of work.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

I felt that the first two films “Through the Eyes of the Sculptor” and “Glass and Ceramics” were the most interesting because the videos were entertaining. I also felt that those two videos were the most informative. On the other hand, the last video wasn’t intriguing to me I got bored with it pretty quickly. However, these videos add depth to my understanding because I get to see how the tools described in the textbook are used.
